Hidden Cameras with Audio
Hidden Cameras with Audio brings together our spy cameras that pick up sound as well as pictures. Video shows what happened, but sound often explains why: a raised voice, a knock at the door, or a dog barking for hours. This page explains the two kinds of audio these cameras have, so you can choose the one that does what you need.
Two Kinds of Audio: Recorded Sound and Two-Way Talk
Cameras described as having audio do one of two different things, and it is worth knowing which you need before you buy.
- Records sound with the video: a built-in microphone saves sound into the footage, so when you play it back you hear what was said. In this range that includes the disguised mini camera, the car key camera with a 6-hour battery, the mini clock camera, the mini PoE camera and the small Wi-Fi camera with a microphone.
- Two-way audio: a microphone and speaker let you listen live and talk back through the app on your phone, like an intercom. That includes the PIR sensor, bulb, night light, Bluetooth speaker, wireless charging clock, peephole and solar floodlight cameras. Their product pages don't say whether this sound is also saved with the recording, so if you need sound on playback, choose a camera from the first group.
Also Known As
Hidden cameras with audio are also searched for as hidden cameras with sound, spy cameras with audio, hidden cameras with a microphone, wireless cameras with a microphone, or cameras with two-way audio. People looking for a portable option often search for a body camera with audio. The names overlap, so check the product page for whether a camera records sound, offers two-way talk, or both.

Common Uses for Hidden Cameras with Audio
- Checking on pets: hear whether a dog is barking or whining while you're out, and talk to it through a two-way camera.
- At the front door: hear who is calling and speak to them through the peephole or floodlight camera, without opening the door.
- Your own empty home or business: sound can tell you a window was broken or a door forced, even when it happened out of shot.
- A record of your own conversations: a portable camera you carry can record a meeting or dispute you take part in, with video and sound.
Features to Compare
- Recorded sound or two-way audio: decide whether you need sound on playback, a live intercom, or both.
- Wi-Fi or memory card: Wi-Fi cameras let you listen live from your phone. A no-Wi-Fi camera records video and sound to a memory card, with no app needed. Wi-Fi spy cameras
- Power: battery cameras can go anywhere but need recharging. Mains, light-socket, network-cable and solar cameras run continuously.
- Night vision: sound works in the dark, but the picture may not. Check each product page for night vision. Night vision cameras
- Where it goes: only the solar floodlight is rated for outdoor use. The other cameras belong indoors.
How to Choose the Right Camera with Audio
- To hear sound when you play footage back, choose a camera that records sound with the video.
- To listen live and speak through the camera, choose a Wi-Fi camera with two-way audio.
- To record on the move, choose the car key camera or the disguised mini camera.
- For the front door or outside, choose the peephole or solar floodlight camera.
Responsible Use & Trust
Sound needs more care than video. A microphone picks up conversations, often from further away than a camera can see, and the UK privacy regulator, the ICO, describes audio recording as particularly intrusive. In a 2021 UK court case, a homeowner's doorbell video was found reasonable, but its audio, which reached a neighbour's property, was not.
- Use these cameras only on property you own or control.
- Don't record the private conversations of others, and never use a camera in places where people expect privacy, such as bathrooms or bedrooms used by others.
- Point cameras away from neighbours' homes and public paths, and turn the microphone off in the app if you don't need sound.
- If staff or people who work in your home, such as a nanny, could be recorded, tell them. Recording their conversations covertly is rarely justified.
